How to Crochet a Jute Doormat: A Quick and Easy Weekend DIY Project

For about a year, I was searching all over the place for a nice, simple doormat for my front door. I was honestly getting so desperate that I was slowly coming to terms with buying some basic, ugly synthetic rug from a department store. But then, this natural jute came into my hands, and I told myself: " I'll just have to learn how to crochet!" And guess what? I actually did! This modern crocheted doormat was only my second crochet project ever. I didn't understand the terminology at all, but I am absolutely thrilled with the result. It looks beautiful, minimalist, and the moment I put it on the floor, I knew you'd want one for your home too!

The best part is that crocheting with jute twine is an incredibly quick, easy, and fun project. If I could pull this off as my second attempt with a crochet hook in hand, you can definitely do it too. It's the perfect relaxing weekend project. I crocheted mine in short bursts – in the car while waiting for my little one to wake up, in the evening in front of the TV, or whenever there was a quiet moment at work. No stress, pure joy, and you can get it done in just one afternoon.

Why is this jute an absolute superhero?

Forget about the rough, scratchy, and dirty utility twines from the hardware store that only leave your hands blistered. This natural jute is a completely different league and is absolutely perfect for doormats or baskets.

  • An antibacterial and antifungal miracle: Jute naturally resists bacteria and mold. It doesn’t absorb moisture or unpleasant odors, which is the single most important feature for a doormat you step on every day with wet shoes.

  • It survives everything: It has extremely high tensile strength, holds its shape perfectly, and easily handles everyday family traffic both in the hallway and outside on a covered patio.

  • Soft on your hands: Unlike regular jute, this one is beautifully pliable, making it incredibly pleasant to crochet with, and your project will grow right before your eyes.

A great eco bonus: As a cherry on top, it comes from sustainable sources in the Amazon, is grown without fertilizers, and the entire processing is completely toxic-free. So no chemical What will we need?

You will need:

  • Yarn: 2 skeins of our premium natural jute.

  • Hook: I used a 12mm bamboo crochet hook, which glides beautifully and is super comfortable to hold.

  • Time: 2-3 hours, just one relaxing afternoon with a cup of coffee or your favorite series.

How to do it? It’s no rocket science!

The entire doormat is crocheted in a semi-circle shape. Don't worry, I won't bore you with any complex terminology but just so you get an idea. We start with a magic ring, into which you make a few chain stitches. Don't pull the ring completely tight; just leave it loose enough so the stitches form a nice semi-circle. Then, you crochet double crochets into it and gradually increase in the following rows to keep the mat beautifully flat. To finish it off, you crochet single crochets all along the straight edge, which strengthens the mat and hides any slight imperfections.

The entire process is beautifully shown in this video tutorial that I used myself. It is highly visual, clear, and you will see exactly where to insert your hook. Long story short, it is simply the ideal easy jute crochet project for beginners.

💡 My secret tip against slipping: Jute by itself tends to slide around quite a bit on smooth tiles. To keep your doormat from running away under your feet, I highly recommend placing a standard non-slip rug pad underneath it, or brushing the bottom side with a bit of liquid latex or silicone. It will hold like a charm!

Get inspired, take a little time for yourself, and dive into creating! I would love it if you shared your result with me on Instagram.
